Young Family

lynetteIntroduction

We've been exploring the family tree of my (much) better half Lynette Ann Rowbottom.  We're both retired now, but prior to her retirement in 2014 Lynette was a GP, a family doctor, in Bracknell Berkshire, England.

Lynette's father was Warwick Rowbottom and Warwick's mother was Beatrice Young.  Beatrices's parents were George and Agnes Young.  George and Agnes had some 18 children!  Three of these, Stephen, Gilbert and Raymond emmigrated to Australia in the 1920's.

We're in touch with one of Raymond's daughters, Raeleen, so have a good idea of that branch of the family.  We know a little about Gilbert's family from letters he wrote to Warwick and we've recently contacted his daughter Sue.  We've managed to uncover details of Stephen's side of the family and have received great information and photos from Linda, who's married to Stephen's grandson Greg and from Mark, another grandson of Stephen plus from Michael, Stephen's great grandson and finally from Pete Dillon, another grandson of Stephen and son of Vesta.. Pete visited us in early 2022.

Ironically we now know more about the Australian side of the family than those left in Redditch - though we'll aim to uncover more of that too.  This page is currently mostly aimed at the family in Australia but we'll expand that as we can.

Below we've put together information and photographs that should be of interest to others in the Young family.  This includes our current understanding of George and Agnes Young's descendants plus, to keep it simpler, Stephen Young's family.  We have birth and marraige certificates for George and Agnes.  We have letters from Gilbert to Warwick, which mention his brothers Stephen and Raymond. Plus we have lots of photos of these characters!

We have found a number of Young Family Trees on Ancestry.com and have tried to combine the information on these but cannot be certain we have it correct nor can we see details of poeple on them who are still living.

We've made good progress already but would love to be able to fill in the remaining gaps of these family trees forClick To Enlarge the later generations and fill in names for those still living that we cannot see in Ancestry.com.  Warwick sadly passed away in 2022 but was pretty sharp mentally until the end.  He well remembered his uncles who went to Australia but struggled a little to remember the names of their children, his cousins.  So if any are still alive we'd be thrilled to hear about them and to see pictures.

It would be good if you could email us on stevepowers99@msn,com - it's easier than messaging on Ancestry.com.

All the best

The full Family Tree showing the decendants of George and Agnes is not complete and some details are uncertain.  It's big - you may need to expand it to be able to read it.  You can right-click on the link and save the jpg file to your computer.  It may be easier to instead just review the smaller Stephen Young's family or the simplified version of the descendants of Beatrice, Gilbert, Raymond and Stephen.

The details for the descendants of Beatrice and Raymond should be accurate - they are compiled by the families.

Those for Stephen's descendants are taken from various Trees on Ancestry.co which does not show the names of living individuals, plus help from Linda - we'd love to fill any remaining gaps and correct any mistakes.

The details for the descendants of other children of Agnes and George are from Lynette's father Warwick Rowbottom's memory.  He's now 92 so his memory is not infallible!.

The photographs come from both Warwick Rowbottom (Redditch, UK) and his cousin Raeleen (Melbourne, Australia).  It was Raeleen who had the plaque made for Agnes and George's grave which was a lovely gesture.  Plus some photos from Linda of Stephen, his sons Reg and Gil, his grandson Greg and great granddaughters Sarah and Jessica snd most recently the photos of Stephen's children from Mark's tree on Ancestry.com..

How many children did George and Agnes have?

There's no doubt George and Agnes had an outstandingly large number of children by any standards!  And all lived together in a very modest little house.  There are differing accounts however of just how many!

Eddie had been told that his mother Amy was one of 21.  Warwick was sure that his mother Beatrice was one of 23, some of whom died in infancy.  Raeleen has a list from her father Raymond which shows names and dates of birth of a total of just 18 children. and Gilbert told his daughter Sue he was the 13th child and deventh son ehich would also imply a total of 18.  We think that Raymond's list and Gilbert's story are correct - 18 children in total of whom 5 died in infancy and 13 lived to maturity.

There are three reasons for this conclusion:

  1. Firstly from the census records in 1891, 1901 and 1911.  These list the children who were wtill living at the time of the census and the list of names and ages agrees with Raymond's list with the exception of Francis, Agnes, Walter, Ivy and Vesta who died in infancy and are thus not listed in any census. Records of their births and death's are listed elsewhere however.
  2. Secondly, again from the census record of 1911, the form explicitly details the total number of children, 18, the number living in 1911, 13, and the number who had died by 1911, 5.  It's agreed that Horatio was the last and youngest child, and he is included in the 1911 census,
  3. Thirdly.there simply would not be sufficient time inbetween the known births for Agnes to have had more than a couple of additional children inbetween the eldest George and the youngest Horatio.  It's conceivable that there were some additional children who did not survive born after Horatio, but it's unlikely and there's no record or memory of this happening.

Does it really matter whether it's 18 or 23 children?  Not really and whatever the evidence Warwick would have continued to believe it was 23 anyway! :)  It's possible the 23 arose from the fact that Agnes had 18 children and 5 children died in infancy - so 18 plus 5 is 23!!    Simple!!!

Postscript 1 - Links To Professor Colin Pillinger

Professor Pillinger was a well known face in Britain and beyond.   A much admired and infectiously enthusiastic  planetary scientist, almost as famous for his bushy sideburns as his historic attenpt to land a probe on the surface of Mars -Beagle 2.  Sadly, Professor Pillinger died in 2014.

Colin was married to Judith Mary Hay who is the third cousin of Warwick and the other grandchildren of George and Agnes Young. We came across his daughter Shusanah Pillinger in Ancestry who kindly helped us fill in the blanks.  Shu herself has a claim to fame as an endurance cyclist! Impressed with both father and daughter!!

Here's the link between the families and an obituary for Colin Pillinger.

Postscript 2 - Link To Kerry Hunt

We came across Kerry's family tree on Ancestry as she had used a picture of Lynette's Granny Rowbottom (Beatrice Young) on her tree.  We got in touch with Kerry who kindly replied to set us straight on her position in the family tree.  She would be Seb and Hellie's (& Jamie and Tom's) 5th cousin.  Relationship.

Hi Steve & Lynette,

Thank you so much for the links.

I am actually in the wrong place on your tree, (since corrected) where you have me married to a Hunt this should be my mother Margaret Anne Knight she married Christopher Geiege Hunt my father and I have an older sister Claire Louise Hunt now Baird and a younger brother Paul Thomas Hunt, I’m Kerry Ann Hunt now Pearce.

My mother was born in Stourbridge and her great grandfather married to Caroline Young owned a bakery there. My mum’s grandfather did not follow his father’s trade he instead went into education and he was headmaster of Tardebigge school. My mum and her brother Alan were bought up with their grandparents following their Mother’s death at 30. They lived in the school house until my great grandfather retired when they then moved to Studley. In the early 70s my parents moved to Redditch and this is where I grew up and my parents still live. So the family had come full circle back to Caroline Youngs birth place.

I left Redditch and moved to Edgebaston, Birmingham for a while and then to Stratford upon Avon. I lost my sight in my left eye and most of my vision in my right eye in 2013 so decided to move to Studley to be closer to my parents as I could no longer drive.

This may explain any spelling errors.

Kerry
